Two-Button Baby Cardi

I've had two skeins of bamboo sock yarn for ages, one white and one light green, and have gone back and forth about what to make with them. I've started a pair of socks for myself, a scarf, and even thought about a lacy tank, but none of the projects were what the yarn wanted to be (you knitters know what I'm talking about). So when a dear friend from my island days told me she was due this spring, I knew the yarn would finally find a home. My hope is that it will fit the little lady just as fall is setting in and the coastal air is beginning to cool.

I found the pattern - aptly named "Easy Baby Cardigan" - in one of my books, More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. As with everything I knit, I took some liberties with the pattern. I'm not actually sure what size I made - I tend to err on the side of "too big" when knitting something for tiny humans, as they seem to grow quite quickly (from what I've witnessed). Also, because I knit the two strands together to make the sweater a little thicker and warmer, I had to play around with the gauge a bit. I sewed under the arms to the edge of the cuff so they could easily fold up or down to accommodate growing arms, and went with just two buttons (sourced from my LYS), rather than four.

It was a fairly quick project, definitely as easy as the name implies and probably fell within the 4 hour range suggested. The book divides projects into hour time-frames for completion: less than 2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, more than 8, and I find that most knit up in that time. It was fun to make, and it may be my go-to, assuming it's a hit with mom & baby!
